"Friday Night Burger Night" has become an important part of winter on the St. George Peninsula.
Not only do friends and neighbors come in to shake of the doldrums of the long season by sharing a burger and a beer, but since it's inception 6 years ago, Burger Night has had a mission...raising awareness and money for local non-profits.
We have raised about $500 each season, a dollar per burger at a time, for our local Boyscouts, The Pope Memorial Humane Society, Trekkers, The Jackson Memorial Library and it's Pre-K program, and this year for The Knox County Adopt a Backpack Program.
This season, Have a Burger, Fill a Backpack!
We've partnered with Area Interfaith Outreach (AIO) and their Adopt a Backpack Program.
Almost half of children in Knox County live with food insecurity. Maine is by far the most "food insecure" state in New England, and 12th in the nation. At 7 of the 10 schools in our local district, 50% to 90% of kids qualify for free breakfast and lunch at school. On weekends, many don't get enough to eat. In some of our schools it’s nearly all students. At South Elementary School in Rockland 90% qualify, so all children receive free meals. The program is also at St. George School. Currently, 13 of our kids benefit from the program.
$225 fills a child's weekend backpack for a full school year. If you're too far away to join us for a Burger, please consider donating by clicking HERE.
